Thandiwe Tsuruba

Main Concept

Ordinary school girl caught up in supernatural shenanigans. Thandiwe (pronounced "tan-dee-wey" often "tan-dee" for short) is an earnest, studious, upbeat girl who loves love. She's enthusiastic about helping others, perhaps in a way that's dangerous to people (herself included).

Through various hijinks, a magical box has implanted itself into Thandiwe's soul, granting wishes left and right to anyone who asks for things near her. However, Thandiwe herself can't choose what wishes do or don't get granted and she's never been able to grant anything for herself. The scope and frequency of wish granting is vague and unclear. In other words, its whatever fits a thread or narrative beat at a time.

Having a magic box in her grants Thandiwe some measure of magical resistance and energy. Someone trying to wish to change her will usually fail. The longer a wish hasn't been granted near her, the more energy she starts to accumulate. She gets a little stronger and faster. If there's a wish she really doesn't like, she can try to burn out the energy through physical effort. At the end of the spectrum, if too many wishes have been granted in a row, she loses energy and might eventually pass out. The wishes can only be granted when she's awake and able to properly process and understand the words.

While she's in danger of being hunted down by supernatural forces, Thandiwe's largely oblivious to that and is focused on Helping Others At All Costs. Since the box won't grant her own wants, just going up to people and asking them to make a wish never really works. She's eager to put herself into complicated situations to try and help out people, even if they didn't really ask for it.

At her core though, beneath her big upbeat personality, Thandiwe has defined herself through what she can do for others. She desperately wants to be loved and treasured, but also assumes she doesn't deserve it unless she's earned it. What "earning" love even looks is a goal post she keeps extending further away from herself.

Sad Future Concept

An older version of herself in her 20s, more worn down and less eager to show emotion. She's dedicated herself to other people's welfare that she's destroying herself mentally and physically. The wish power has gotten substantially weaker as a result, tied as it is to Thandi's health. She continues to punish herself for that lack of control and has been especially vulnerable to falling into the hands of people who want to use her for ill-intent. She just wants to be kissed without feeling bad about it.
